If you’ve been thinking about becoming a member and starting Avatar Nutrition, there are 10 things you should know beforehand to maximize your success. Let’s dive right in!

1. You’ll need to track what you eat when starting Avatar Nutrition

If you find the thought of tracking everything you eat overwhelming at first, that’s okay! You’re certainly not alone – and that’s why we built our app with special features that make entering your food fast and easy. After tracking for a week or two, most people find that it takes less than 5 minutes each day to track everything they eat.

Tracking your food comes with the added benefit of teaching you skills that you can use to manage your weight for the rest of your life. As you track and log what you eat, you’ll soon begin to understand which types of food are going to be good sources for filling out your protein, carb, and fat requirements – and once you get a feel for it, you’ll know what to pick throughout your day to meet your target ranges.

Of course, there’s a bit of a learning curve, but once you start logging your food, you’ll see how simple the process really is. Best of all, tracking your macros will allow you to gain complete control over your weight and body composition for the long haul!

2. You’ll need a food scale and/or measuring cups

Most people are terrible at estimating portion sizes. After all, we’ve gotten used to seeing supersized servings at restaurants, food piled high on giant plates at family gatherings, and breakfast bowls filled to the brim with cereal in the mornings! So when you’re first starting Avatar Nutrition, you’re going to need to weigh and measure your food to ensure that your serving sizes are accurate.

But that doesn’t mean you’ll need to measure everything forever…after a few weeks of weighing out the items you eat the most, you’ll become much better at estimating and can start to eyeball most things. But keep in mind that there are a few situations where you might want to whip out the scale or measuring cups again, even after becoming a master estimator:

  • When you eat a new food you’ve never measured before
  • When you don’t have a lot of macros to work with and precision is necessary
  • When you haven’t measured anything for a while and want to keep your estimation skills sharp

See how easy macro tracking can be in this short video!

3. We don’t believe in “quick fixes

“Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither were you.”

For most people who aren’t starting out very heavy (think under 200 lbs), losing around a pound to a pound and a half per week is right in line with what we’d expect! It’s not a race. By dropping fat in a controlled, sustainable manner, you’ll preserve more muscle while practicing skills that you can continue to use once the weight is off. Each of these things makes it easier to maintain your progress and reduce your risk of rebounding.

People choosing the muscle gain and reverse diet settings can also benefit from taking a controlled and measured approach to achieving their goals. If you want to keep the results you work so hard for, be patient, embrace the learning process, and keep an eye on the bigger picture.

4. You’ll need to weigh yourself weekly

That’s right! For Avatar to work its magic, the system needs to measure how your body changes in response to the macros we give you each week. If you were in the range of your target macros on average throughout your check-in period, the system will be able to analyze your change in weight and body fat and adjust your nutrition to keep you moving toward your goal.

We also provide the option to log your weight daily, which allows the system to calculate and compare the average of all the weights in one check-in period to the previous check-in period. This is useful for people who see their weight fluctuate a lot from day to day since it can wash out potential error from fluid retention due to bad sleep, excess sodium, or unusual amounts of stress!

5. Accountability is HUGE for results

You can add friends on Avatar to view each other’s trackers and send food items, meals, and recipes back and forth…and you can also check to see if your friend has been tracking or not!

Having someone on the journey along with you can give you the support you need to push through a hard time or resist the temptation to give up, while also keeping you motivated and accountable.

6. Patience is a virtue (and KEY to weight loss)

Whether you’re working toward your dream body or simply have a long way to go before getting to a healthy weight, understand that nothing that’s good ever comes easily and nothing that comes easily ever lasts…

You’re going to be working on your fitness for literally the rest of your life. It’s not something you achieve once and hold onto forever; it’s something you need to continuously keep up with for all your days on this Earth. That being said, don’t rush it. Small steps in the right direction add up to a tremendous amount of ground covered over time.

If you’re worried about only losing one pound over the course of a week of concentrated effort, remember that 10 weeks of “only” one pound still adds up to 10 pounds of fat loss! That’s significant for just about anybody, and if you carry that on for 6 months, you’ll be down a life-changing 24 pounds!

Now apply that mindset to the timeframe of your life, and you’ll understand that steady progress is incredibly powerful. Watch the short video below to hear from one of Avatar’s Co-Founder on the topic of motivation and patience.

7. We update the app regularly

Just like you’re working on your health and fitness, we’re working to improve our service, app, and company! To keep you in the loop, we send out notifications when we update the app or need to make other major announcements. We also value your feedback and love building features and tools that make a difference in our members’ lives!

8. You’ve got access to coaches and a community

If you ever feel stuck or need advice, you have professional assistance at your fingertips! During business hours, you can reach our friendly and expert coaching team through live-chat in the app, and you can also make a support ticket for more complicated requests.

For those looking to join a vibrant and positive community, we also have our Avatar Family group on Facebook (Avatar Family Official). Here you can interact with other members to share recipes and tips, ask questions, and stay inspired. You’ll even have access to weekly live-stream Q&A sessions hosted by the Co-Founders Mark and Katie!

9. Tracking macros is like “learning to ride a bike”

It may seem a little intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it, tracking macros is a skill you’ll keep for life.

Getting the hang of Avatar takes about 2 weeks, so if you have a hard time reaching your targets the first several days, that’s normal and fine! Just keep trying, learning, and reaching out for help from our coaches if you need it, and you’ll soon reap the benefits of our life-changing system!

There are tons of features on the app that make tracking macros easy, and once you’ve drilled down the basics, you’ll definitely want to explore the settings menu and other areas of the app.

10. It’s recommended that you cycle through goals along your journey

Most people who use Avatar start on the Fat Loss goal setting, but once you reach your goal weight, this is by no means the end of the journey! We almost always recommend switching to the Reverse Diet goal after you’re done losing weight. Instead of risking weight regain by immediately bumping calories back up to pre-diet levels, a reverse diet brings them back up in a slow and controlled manner. This allows you to figure out how many calories you need to maintain your goal weight and get back to a healthier intake…all while improving your metabolism and minimizing fat gain.

Once you reach the end of your reverse diet and are happy with your new calorie intake, you’ll switch your goal to Maintenance, where you can stay until you want to mix things up in your journey. As we said earlier, fitness and health is something you need to manage proactively, so keeping a handle on things by setting your goal to maintenance can keep you from falling off the wagon!
